About the Centre
Western Australia has a robust wool industry comprising 8,000 woolgrowers carrying stocks of about 25 million sheep.
The Western Australian wool industry produces 11 percent of the State's gross value of agricultural production and about a quarter of the annual Australian wool clip.
The WA Wool Technology Training Centre was established to support a well-skilled industry that can continue to produce high-quality wool that has consistent processing characteristics and so maintain the excellent standards in this valuable sector.
Industry Support
David Aslett, Manager Western Region at the Australian Wool Exchange Ltd (AWEX) says:
“The WA Wool Technology Centre is a wonderful example of a successful wool industry partnership. The Australian Wool Exchange Limited (AWEX) continues to be very supportive of Challenger TAFE and the individuals involved in providing wool training. The Centre is proving to be a very successful venture and is providing great benefits to the Australian wool industry.”
Portability
The Centre prepares students for employment in the wool industry. The courses are nationally-accredited, so they are relevant to employment all around Australia.
Flexibility
The Centre's flexible delivery strategies, such as self-paced learning, flexible enrolment and the mobile training facility, have been established to meet the unique needs of the rural community.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Staff at the WA Wool Technology Training Centre are qualified in RPL Assessment and can help wool workers and growers who have gained skills through work experience obtain formal qualifications. Many people in the rural workforce fall into this category.
Workplace Training
Through its dispersed operations, the Centre is well-situated to train young people in the regional workforce.
Short Courses
The Centre frequently delivers new wool technology professional classer and grower short courses. We will continue to do this both independently and with agreements from other specialist training centres around the State as new learning programs are developed.
