It Pays to Learn Allowance
The State Government is making education and training more affordable by continuing the It Pays to Learn Allowance for 16 and 17 year olds.
The annual allowance is $200 for students turning 16 or 17 in 2009 in Years 11 and 12, and up to $400 for those students turning 16 or 17 in 2009 in full-time training, as well as in apprenticeships and traineeships.

How can I apply?
Your parent(s)/guardian(s) will automatically be sent a form to your home address if you are enrolled at Challenger TAFE in 2009. You must complete the forms and return it to a Challenger TAFE campus (at the student Administration or Course Information Counters) by the due date published on the form to receive your allowance.

Austudy and Youth Allowance
You may be eligible for Austudy if you are aged 25 or over and:
- studying an approved full-time course at an approved institution, or
- undertaking a full-time Australian Apprenticeship
Unlike Youth Allowance, there is no independence test for Austudy. If you qualify for Austudy you are considered independent. This means the parental means test does not apply.
Note: Your previous studies may affect your eligibility for Austudy.
You may be eligible for Youth Allowance if you are:
- a full-time Student or an Australian Apprentice under 25 years, or
- under 21 years and looking for work.

Abstudy
If you are an Indigenous student, ABSTUDY may be able to help you stay at school or go on to further studies. ABSTUDY consists of a fortnightly living allowance as well as additional components to help with the costs associated with attending school.

Newstart
You may be eligible for Newstart Allowance if you are:
- aged 21 or over, and
- under the Age Pension age, and
- looking for paid work, and
- prepared to enter into an activity agreement, and
- not involved in industrial action
You may be able to receive a short-term exemption from the activity test in special circumstances.

Pensioner Education Supplement
To be eligible, students must be undertaking approved full-time or part-time study. The part-time study must be at least 25 percent of a full-time study load and can be approved if students are a sole parent, carer or you have a substantial disability. The 'Pensioner Education Supplement' is a non-taxable payment and does not have an income or assets test.
